A Quick History

Teen magazines were originally conceived in the United States in around the 1940’s. They quickly became popular and the company Fleetway created the magazine Honey in the UK which was sold between 1960-1986, this magazine was regarded as having established the sector.  However in America these types of magazines were proving most popular with teenage girls and in 1944 Seventeen Magazine was first published and was the only one at the time devoting its pages to the needs and wants of teenage girls, the magazine was a success and is still in publication today. In the UK, sales in the teen magazine sector peaked in 1998 as teenagers had a much wider variety of magazines competing for their business. The number of teen magazines tripled from around five in 1990 to over 19 in 2000. "Little sister" magazines were popular including Teen People, Teen Vogue, Elle Girl and CosmoGIRL!

Today teen magazines are very popular in Europe, America, Australia, Latin America and Asia; they usually consist of gossip, news, fashion tips and interviews and may include small samples of makeup or other products, posters and inserts. Like most other mainstream magazines, teen magazines can be found monthly at supermarkets, stores and newsstands. In recent years, teen magazines have also appeared on the internet with dedicated websites and even online blogs.
